Career Goal: To pursue a career in agricultural policy and legislation to benefit agriculture on a global level.
Piper Merritt credits FFA with giving her the confidence to live with purpose and share her talents. “When I joined FFA, I discovered that I was more than a student in a classroom or number on a roster,” Merritt says. “My advisors, and close mentors helped me not only to define my purpose but motivated me to pursue it, every day.”
Merritt was elected to the 2017-18 National FFA Officer Team as central region vice president at the 90th National FFA Convention & Expo.
Majoring in agricultural economics, Merritt is a sophomore at Oklahoma State University. When she graduates, she plans to pursue a career as a government affairs agent or legislative assistant for an agricultural firm.
Merritt served as the 2016-17 Oklahoma FFA secretary. While in high school, her supervised agricultural experience involved raising and selling show pigs.
“One conversation with one agriculture broadcaster led to one pig that began my entire SAE operation,” Merritt says. “I showed one pig, which ultimately led to a six-sow operation, selling over 60 pigs throughout my SAE.”
As the owner of Merritt Showpigs, she handled records, finances, and all business transactions.
Merritt says she believes that everyone has a unique story to share, and this year, she is looking forward to listening and learning. “Through my year of service, I hope to learn something from every experience and opportunity that we have this year,” Merritt says.
